LONGBARN FARM VISITS
Longbarn farm has 10 acres of peaceful, interesting land to visit. As well as the enchanting alpacas there are charming rare breed Herdwick sheep, ponies and a goat. There is also a meandering stream, a willow plantation and wild ground that attracts a variety of wild life.
Visits to longbarn can be tailored to suit the needs of any particular group or society.
We offer an introduction to alpaca keeping for those considering keeping these wonderful animals. For general groups we give talks about these delightful creatures with an opportunity to feed and handle the alpacas. These talks can include an introduction to felt making, this is very popular with children. Most people prefer just to watch the alpacas and let the peace and tranquility they inspire wash over them.
Our Herdwick sheep are always popular with visitors especially when they have lambs at foot. The lambs are always born black and gradually turn grey.
In addition to the domestic animals there is a abundance of wild life on the farm. Guided walks pointing out flora and fauna with some of the folk lore and ecology attached have been well received.
The stream is ideal for demonstrating river ecology and geology on a small, safe scale. School or youth groups find these talks useful to back up class work or as a starting point for merit badges.
Photographic or art groups are welcome to try capturing alpacas on camera or canvas. This can be challenging as alpacas are not an easy subject to portray.
We hope to start running willow working classes next winter. Our willow plantation should produce usable willow wands by then.
Visits can last an hour or two, half a day or all day to suit your needs and the subject. Refreshments can be provided or you can bring a picnic.
Groups that have already enjoyed time at Longbarn include: The Spinners Guild, The WI, Romsey Arthritis Care, Landford Arts & Craft Group and a home schooled group.
Scouts, Guides and other youth groups can tailor their visit around gaining merit badges.
